Still, she asked the vet if perhaps he wouldn’t, after the sixtieth day, allow Tomita to stay at the animal clinic until the kittens arrived.

“You don’t want to do that to her,” he said, latching the door to her carrier. “The clinic is for sick animals. She’s perfectly healthy.” He looked at me. “You’ll help your grandmother, won’t you?”

I nodded.

“Can you?” she asked in the car on the way home. “Are you sure?”

I reminded her what everyone had said for the past weeks: cats had kittens without attendants.

“But what if she doesn’t take care of them? Like with Mr. Boy?”

“She will. And if she doesn’t, I can always wash them, I can cut the cords.”

“Will you?”

I said I would.
